Excellent news for wine producers was announced a few days ago. And it is that the production of Chilean wines had an increase of 35.9% compared to the year 2017. This, according to the results of the National Wine Production Report 2018 presented by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG, under the Ministry of Chilean agriculture.
This report is prepared with the information provided by the producers, through their production sworn statements made electronically on the Service’s portal.
The increase in the production of wines during the season 201 is closely related to climatic factors, since it was a summer of moderate temperatures that affected the gradual maturation of the vine varieties in the different wine regions, allowing to extend the harvest until mid-year. May in the later varieties, this year the environmental and climatic factors that affected the harvest in 2016 and 2017 are absent.
Some Chilean productions increased up to three times the production with respect to 2017, mainly due to the favorable climatic conditions as well as to the availability of water resources for the vine plantations, which allowed to express a productive potential that had not been seen in the last harvests product of a persistent drought of previous years.
Big numbers
It is important to note that the total wine production in 2018 reached 1,289,896,983 liters, a figure that is 35.9% higher than in 2017, which was 1,052,781,944 liters and corresponds to wines with designation of origin, equivalent to 81.6% of the total declared.
The wines without designation of origin reached 135,891,894 liters. This includes current declared wine wines that do not specify a variety, equivalent to 10.5% of the declared total; and 101,223,145 liters to wines from table grapes, which represent 7.9% of the total declared.
The largest wine productions are located in the regions of Maule, O’Higgins and Metropolitana respectively, totaling 88.9% of the total, concentrating in the Maule Region 43.7% of the total produced in the country, which is where the wines that WWW.CORTAHOJAS.com exports are produced.
Main strains obtained in the 2018 vintage
In relation to the production of wines with denomination of origin, 65.8% corresponded to wines from red varieties and 34.2% to wines from white varieties. When analyzing the productions in relation to the types of grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon reaches 28.7% of the total, followed by Sauvignon Blanc with 13.9%, Merlot with 12.6%, Chardonnay with 9.6%. , Carmenére with 7.4% and the Syrah variety with 6.9%.
Regarding the variation of the production of the wines with denomination of origin by variety, it is observed that in the red varieties the greater increases of production with respect to the harvest 2017 were presented in Country in a 74.3%, Carmenere in a 43 , 9%, Cabernet Sauvignon by 32.1%, Merlot by 23.5% and Syrah by 14.5%.
