In May 2017, exports of bottled wine in the Brazilian market recorded a 29.5% increase in volume compared to the same month of 2016.
Although in April, exports of bottled Chilean wine decreased by 3.5% in volume and 6.2% in value compared to the same month last year, in May, shipments registered a growth of 4, 9% in volume and 1.5% in value in relation to the same period of 2016.
This increase is explained by the good performance of the Chinese markets (shipments grew 49% in volume and 49.3% in value) and Brazil (29.5% in volume and 28.2% in value).
The Chinese market has been growing at double digits for quite a while for most of the vineyards. Five years ago China did not exceed 5% of our exports, and today it is already surpassing 15%. It is a country that has huge potential and will continue to grow at double digits.
The strain that is most consumed in China is cabernet sauvignon, which in turn is the most consumed strain worldwide. Another interesting fact is that the carmen is also a strain that has had very good acceptance by the Chinese consumer.
In Brazil, despite the economic and political crisis in that country, sales of Chilean wine have been increasing. The numbers speak for themselves. The sale of Chilean export wines is growing very strong.
Today, Chile needs to have a premium positioning in the North American market to be able to sell wines of higher price. The second half of this year presents several challenges for the Chilean wine industry, mainly due to the international political scenario.
