Representatives of the Government of Chile and Chilean wine producers and exporters will participate in the ceremony where Chile assumed the presidency of the World Wine Trade Group (WWTG), a governmental and private sector organization whose purpose is to facilitate the wine trade for the benefit of exporters and importers. The organization includes representatives from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Georgia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, Uruguay and Chile, which has been a member since its founding in 1998.
This will be the fifth time that Chile assumes the presidency (before it did in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2011). The head of the Regulatory Department of Direcon, Gastón Fernández, stated that he expects that during this year of work new instruments will be developed to facilitate the wine trade, reducing the current non-tariff barriers, simplifying the certification procedures, exchanging information, and also, acting jointly in multilateral forums such as WTO Committee on Barriers to Trade, Codex Alimentarius, World Health Organization, among others.
The group articulated between government and industry, integrated by the economies of the new world, is responsible for 30% of exports, 35% of production, and 27% of consumption, worldwide. The amount exported from this group to the world, totaled 8,400 Million dollars. With these antecedents that dimension the relevance for Chile, the country will continue advancing to detect and correct the obstacles that can be generated in the commercial flows of wine.
The expectation of Chile is also to emphasize the incorporation of other countries that can strengthen the work that the Group is developing, in fact in this last meeting important observers participated, such as Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Mexico, United Kingdom.
A little history
The WWTG is an organization founded in 1998, whose objective is to facilitate the trade of wine for the benefit of exporters and importers of member countries, through the exchange of information, good regulatory practices, discussion and analysis of regulations and joint actions for the elimination of technical barriers to trade.
Within the framework of the group’s work, three instruments have been generated: the 2001 Oenological Practices Agreement, the 2007 Labeling Agreement and the 2017 Information Exchange Agreement. This is in addition to a Memorandum of Understanding on Wine Certification in 2011.
