Exports of Chilean wines closed the year 2018 with an increase in the average price in all its categories. According to the information provided by the Chilean Wine Association, the performance for Chilean wines during 2018 was positive, leveraged by an increase in average prices in all categories compared to 2017.

The total of boxes exported stood at 55.3 million, with a slight decrease of -3.3% – in relation to the previous year – mainly due to the decrease in shipments to the United States and Japan.

Regarding the value exported in 2018, it remained at a level similar to that of 2017, totaling US $ 1,597.6 million, sustained by an increase in the average price, which went from US $ 28 / case to US $ 28.9 / box, with a growth of 3%.

Wine and bottle
During 2018, bottled wine grew by 3% from US $ 28 to 28.9 / box; the price of sparkling wines increased by 3.8% to US $ 37.6 / box and total exports (including bulk and packaged wines) averaged US $ 2.4 / liter, which represented an increase of 10 % compared to the previous year.

The main markets
China maintained the clear leadership for Chilean bottled wine exports, with a total of 8.1 million boxes and US $ 254 million, representing a 15% share in volume and 16% in the total value of shipments of bottled wine. They are followed, at a very similar level, by the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Brazil, with a 10% share in volume and around 9% in value each.

With respect to 2017, the increase in the value of shipments to South Korea (16.6%), Mexico (16%), the United Kingdom (7.8%) and Ireland (6.7%) stands out.

Among the Top 10 destinations in 2018, the average prices were led by South Korea, with US $ 37 / box, followed by Canada (US $ 33 / box) and China (US $ 31 / box). This period also highlights the increase in average prices in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands compared to the prices obtained in 2017.

Price segment
During 2018, wines above US $ 40 / box showed the best performance, with an average increase of 5% in volume and 6% in value. By segments, wines between US $ 40 and 50 / case grew 8.5% in volume and 8% in value; those between US $ 50 and 60 / box did so at 6% and 7% in volume and value respectively and those greater than US $ 60 / box showed a slight decrease of -1.2% in volume and an increase of 4.4% in value, all compared to the previous year.
For wines over US $ 40 / box, China is in the first place, reaching US $ 88.3 million and 1.2 million boxes of these wines of higher value, representing an increase of 2.2% in value and a volume very similar to last year. In this period highlights the increases in the value of shipments to France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Japan.
