The beginning of 2019 brings good news for producers and exporters of Chilean wine. This is because the exports of bottled wines closed the year 2018 with a commercialization of US $ 1,508 million, figure that realizes that sales were almost even compared to 2017, year in which the industry stood out with a record of US $ 1,520 million in shipments.
According to data from the Central Bank of Chile, shipments reached US $ 1,622 million FOB. The above, despite the fact that, in volume, there was a decrease of 4.3% after falling to 456.7 million liters.
According to information from the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), wine shipments in 2018 were ranked below those of forestry, fruit and salmon, but exceeded shipments of white meat.
On the other side of the coin, sparkling exports – after several upward seasons – marked a decrease of 15.3% in volume, registering shipments of 4.6 million liters. In value, marketing decreased to US $ 19.2 million after showing a decrease of 12.4%.
According to market sources, the sharp fall in sparkling shipments is due to the fact that Japan – one of its main markets – had a significant decrease last year due to a high base of comparison. In this way, the results marked the first fall in exports of this type of wine since 2013, the year in which its “boom” began.
The main destinations of Chilean wines
For the third consecutive year, China maintained its place as the main destination for Chilean bottled wine. This country gained almost 10 percentage points in the total wine shipments within a period of five years. Today it concentrates 16.5% of the share of exports of Chilean wine, while in 2013 it only had 6.6% of the activity.
Despite this growth, last year was far from registering the boom that it showed in previous years. For example, in 2017 its growth in volume and value was almost 30%. However, the amount exported in 2018 to the Asian giant was 71 million liters, with a decrease of 2.8%, and the value sold reached US $ 249.5 million, with a slight decrease of 0.4%. However, the rest of the destination markets have shown important variations in the last five years.
United Kingdom and the United States, years ago were the largest markets for Chilean wine, fell by about four percentage points in five years in its share of total wine shipments. Meanwhile, Brazil and Japan have managed to gain a larger market share in this period.
Chilean wines, mainly Premium wines, are being recognized all over the world. A clear example of this is the Asian continent. Undoubtedly, high-end or premium Chilean wines are the most important in the international high class market. Chilean wines occupy an important place in this booming Asian market.
