The wine sector is one of the productive activities that has best endured the economic stagnation that affects the country. According to a study by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), Chile would position itself as the largest producer of wines in the region and would return to the same position it occupied in 2012.

The data indicate that local production would fall from 12.9 million hectoliters (hl, a unit equivalent to one hundred liters) in 2015 to the expected 10.1 million hl for this year. This situation would reveal a drop of 21% in wine production, reaching its lowest figures for the last five years, according to the study. However, before this scenario Chile would position itself in the seventh place among the largest wine producers in the world.

Chile’s better position in the ranking of the report was favored by the fall of Argentina, whose production is expected to fall from 13.4 million hl in 2015 to 8.8 million hl expected this year.

Worldwide

This report warns that world wine production would fall to its lowest level this year since 2012, mainly due to adverse weather conditions that affected yields in France and South America. Thus, global wine production would decrease by 5%, dropping from 273.9 million hl to 259.5 million hl, which translates into a 5% drop.

The fall in world production is influenced by a 12% decrease in France, 21% in Chile, 19% in South Africa and 35% in Argentina. In spite of this, the country that most falls in wine production is Brazil, which would drop 50%.
