It was no surprise, but a hard time, due to adverse weather conditions, as the storm that affected much of the country in April affected the volumes of wine. However, analysts are forecasting that inventories would reach this year (2016), but warn that in 2017 the overstock could disappear.
Both rain and cold influenced the delay maturity and lower yields, especially red varieties. With this background, the industry generated 1,014 million liters, 21.2% less than what occurred in 2015, the report of vintage wines of Chile.
Out of this amount, 852 million liters are wines with denomination of origin (O.D.); 121 million to those without O.D. and 40 million to wines from table grapes.
According to the opinion of experts and figures in hand, vintage 2016 it represents the lowest figure in the last 5 years, after 2014, when they totaled only 989.6 million liters by the strong impact of frost.
On average, over the last 5 years (except 2014), Chilean wineries record harvest of more than 1,200 million liters. The 1,014 million liters of the current year not only broke that trend, as in 2014, but also is less than the annual average of the last decade, amounting to almost a million and a half liters volume.
After the harsh climatic conditions in April, a drop of 30% from the previous harvest, which was calculated in a production of about 900 million liters expected. Fortunately this did not happen.
On the other hand, current technologies in agriculture allowed many producers to advance the crops, knowing that came rainfall. There were vines harvested before the rains or immediately after, which avoided the problems of fruit to these conditions.
On stock down
The overstock of wine with which it had since 2015, allowed mitigate the effects of lower production on the supply of the vineyards. While the current season is assured in 2017 the industry will depend importantly on how the harvest of that year comes, as initial inventories will not be as high as those recorded in this season.
If next year an unfavorable climate situation, representing a significant decline in production, the industry is generated could see complicated by lower volumes.
