This situation, according to the Servicio Agricola y Ganadero (SAG), caused in 2014 the production of white wines have a drop of 23.4%, to 243 million liters, while red wines fell 21% to 598 million liters.

Other varieties which recorded declines in production were the chardonnay, 38%; Carmenere, with 35% sauvignon blanc, with 26%.

This situation prompted the syrah in 2014 was transformed into the 4th most planted variety in Chile, displacing the 5th position Carmenere and sixth place chardonnay. The ranking is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.
